One thing I tell my couples is that it’s key to capture your personality in your photos. Olivia and Josh’s summer barn wedding at Riverlands near Howden sure hit that nail on the head. These two are full of emotion and love. It was one of those days you couldn’t take a bad photo.

A cottage morning and a house full of photos

Olivia and her ten bridesmaids got ready in the cottage at Riverlands, all in matching pink pyjamas, with plenty of fizz and even more laughs. At one point the whole gang headed outside for selfies on the lane!

Josh got ready at home with his groomsmen in navy three piece suits. My second shooter Chris said the house was full of pictures on every single surface, which shows how much photographs mean to the whole family. Hopefully a few from today make it onto the walls, or whatever surfaces are left!

Then the dress went on. Olivia’s dad saw her for the first time out on the patio. The hug that followed said it all.

A brick barn ceremony at Riverlands

Riverlands Wedding Barns sits on a family farm at Faxfleet, near Howden, surrounded by open fields and nature reserves. The ceremony barn has old brick walls, wooden beams and fairy lights. It fills with soft natural light, which is a dream for wedding photography.

Olivia arrived with her dad under the pergola, with her bridesmaids in blush pink walking in ahead of her. Josh was waiting at the front and the two of them smiled and laughed their way through the vows.

Confetti and a very big bridal party

Confetti came straight after the ceremony, with their guests lined up along the path outside the barn. Then it was straight into the group photos, done my usual way so nobody was kept from the drinks for long.

With such a big bridal party taking charge of the entertainment, it was non stop laughter and fun all day. Drinks were out in the courtyard under the pergola and festoon lights, with lots of hugs from family and friends.

Speeches first, then the wedding breakfast

Olivia and Josh went for the speeches before the food. I always prefer it that way, so everyone can relax and enjoy their meal once the nerves are out of the way. The speeches had the wooden barn in fits of laughter, Josh’s included.

The barn itself looked gorgeous, with long tables, pink napkins and drapes across the ceiling. The wooden walls give the whole room a lovely warm glow.

A walk around the grounds

After the meal we took a walk around the grounds for their couple photos, past the red tractor, the black timber barns and the shepherd’s hut, then out into the fields in front of the farmhouse. It was lovely photographing two people so in love with each other. You could tell Josh was absolutely taken away by Olivia.

I always tell couples to allow 15 to 30 minutes for couple photos, so you’re never away from your guests for long.

One hell of a party

They cut the cake at 8pm and went straight into their first dance in the brick barn, with their guests all around them. Josh even threw in a spin.

Now, I always say the dance floor was full all night, but that’s an understatement for these two. Chairs in the air, tambourines, sore feet, bags in the air, everything you can imagine happened. It was one hell of a party!
