Finding your perfect Yorkshire wedding venue
An honest guide to the best wedding venues Yorkshire has to offer, written from behind the camera rather than copied from a directory.
I’m Aden, a Yorkshire wedding photographer with 17 years and more than 500 weddings behind me. I’ve photographed at every venue here, from Georgian country houses and a 14th century castle to rustic barns and hotels near the coast. Getting married near Hull? Most of my Yorkshire weddings are there, so have a look at my Hull wedding photographer page too.

Venue owners: get in touch if you’d like to be added once I’ve photographed a wedding with you.
Local tip: if your guests are coming from out of town, make sure someone introduces them to chip spice. It’s a Hull thing and most chippies in the city have it. For a view, walk along the Hessle foreshore under the Humber Bridge at sunset.

Country house wedding venues in Yorkshire
1
Howden, East Yorkshire
Saltmarshe Hall
13 weddings here in the past five years
Grade II* listedUp to 118 for the ceremonySleeps about 38
Read moreShow less
The wedding venue I've photographed more than any other in Yorkshire. A Grade II* listed house in 17 acres on the banks of the River Ouse, with that famous staircase for your entrance and a lime tree avenue for an outdoor aisle. There's only one wedding a day, so it really does feel like your own house.
My takeOne of the easiest venues to photograph because there’s so much range inside and out. Whether it’s sunny or raining, there’s always somewhere to go. The staff are always so friendly, which makes the creative side that much easier.
2
Beverley, East Yorkshire
Tickton Grange

Georgian houseThree ceremony spotsFarmstead barn

A handsome Georgian house just outside Beverley, with lawns for an outdoor ceremony beneath the pillars of the garden pavilion. The Farmstead next door has beams, a fireside and fire pits, so you get country house elegance and a proper party in one place.
My takeTickton has three ceremony spots: the Rose Room, the barn or outside at the pavilion. I love that it suits so many different styles. If it rains, the barns give you a more rustic look and the Rose Room a polished one.
3
Rise, near Hull
Rise Hall
2 weddings here in the past five years, 1 more booked
Grade II* listed31 bedrooms300 acres

A Grade II* listed Regency house rebuilt between 1815 and 1820, in 300 acres of grounds. You marry in the Drawing and Morning Rooms, then move through to the Orangery for up to 180 guests. With 31 bedrooms, most of your guests can stay the night.
My takeRise Hall is HUGE. Walking from the front to the back feels like a trek, but don’t let that put you off. It means there’s so much scope. The ceremony usually happens near the front and round the back is the largest reception room I’ve ever seen. Rain is never a problem here.
4
Sledmere, Yorkshire Wolds
Sledmere House
Grade I listedBegun in 1751Capability Brown park

The Sykes family home since the 1750s, high on the Yorkshire Wolds between Driffield and Malton. It's Grade I listed and the Long Library is often called one of the most beautiful rooms in England. The 960 acre park around it was designed by Capability Brown.
My takeSledmere feels like a museum, with history everywhere you look. At one wedding we had the speeches on the staircase and it felt like we were in an Edwardian drama.
5
Howsham, near York
Howsham Hall

A Jacobean hall built around 1610 and Grade I listed, out in the countryside north east of York. If you've always pictured a proper stately home wedding, this is the one.
My takeWhat stood out for me is the front of the house and its huge windows. Inside it feels like a stately drama, with lots of little themed rooms that are perfect for photos.
6
Bawtry, near Doncaster
Bawtry Hall
4 weddings here in the past five years, 2 more booked

A grand hall in the market town of Bawtry with oak floors, chandeliers and big mirrors, plus acres of private grounds and woodland for your portraits. Guests can stay at The Crown Hotel, just 200 yards down the road.
My takeThe best bit is the gardens and the fountain. Coming out of your ceremony, you can have your confetti with the fountain as the backdrop.
7
Near Richmond, North Yorkshire
Middleton Lodge

A Georgian estate of 200 acres near Richmond, with two acres of walled gardens, the glassy Fig House and a cellar bar. Up to 160 can join you for the day and 200 in the evening. The whole place is yours.
My takeI class Middleton as the Michelin star of wedding venues. It has it all. There are different places to get married on site, so we can really explore for photos. The perfectly kept grounds are full of hidden gems and the food is incredible too.

A Jacobean manor built in 1633 and run by the same family for three generations. From May to September you can marry outside in the walled garden or the courtyards. The 17th century stone gazebo is one of the smallest licensed wedding spots in the country.

A 19th century manor house just outside Saltburn by the Sea, with a bright ballroom for up to 110 guests and acres of grounds. My first time there was Lois and Harry's spring wedding and I loved every minute.
My takeI loved the history all through this place. Once the ceremony and reception are set up, the view across the room looks majestic. For photos, take a walk down the hill to the lake and back through the woodland. It gives you so much range.

A converted barn wedding venue on the edge of Hull and one of my most booked venues. Courtney and Dan went all in with a church ceremony, neon signs, fireworks and sparklers. The barn took every bit of it in its stride.
My takeIt sits right on the edge of Hull but feels like a hidden getaway. Liv and the team run weddings brilliantly and they’ve recently given the patio a makeover. Everything is right where you want it. Perfect for partying!

A rural barn wedding venue on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds. You have the whole place for a few days, with rooms around a courtyard, a hot tub and a barbecue the day after. It feels like a weekend away with your favourite people.
My takeTucked away in the countryside on the outskirts of Hull, Bunny Hill is a lovely big barn that holds plenty of guests. There’s woodland to explore and a huge lawn, so couple photos never mean a long walk.

A hidden gem north of Hull, with The Grand Lodge for your meal and party and a pavilion on the lake for an outdoor ceremony. Hannah and Mike married out there in full sunshine and it was faultless.
My takeAt Oaklands you really feel like you’re escaping. It sits down long winding roads in the woodland, around a lake. For photos we can go anywhere we like. It’s one of my favourites for a natural look.

Rustic wedding barns near Howden, with a courtyard, a red tractor, a shepherd's hut and open fields for golden hour. Four real weddings from here are on my blog, from summer barn parties to a dog friendly boho day.
My takeRiverlands sits on the banks of the Ouse, a quiet venue with two barns. Everything you need is right there. When it rains you can head indoors or into one of the houses. With the main manor house for bridal prep, there are even more photo opportunities.

A wedding barn on the Bolton Abbey Estate looking out over the Wharfe valley. I photographed two weddings here on the same February weekend and the low winter sun over the Dales was something else.

A country estate with its own lake on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. You can say your vows by the water, then party in the barns. The views from Carrie and Rory's day are some of my favourites.

A hotel with the Crab and Lobster restaurant next door, which holds two AA rosettes. The gardens have fountains, ivy archways and terraces, so there's a lovely spot for an outdoor ceremony and your drinks.
My takeSuch a unique venue. They play on the Crab and Lobster theme with a nautical bar. The themed rooms each have their own little hidden stories. The gardens are stunning too, so everything for photos is on site.

Part of the Drewton Estate in South Cave, with a private terrace and an outdoor fire pit for the evening. Courtney and Ben's black tie wedding here turned into one of the best parties of my year.

What to look for when you view a Yorkshire wedding venue
After hundreds of weddings, these are the things that make the biggest difference to your photos. Take this list with you when you visit a wedding venue.
- Ask about the rain plan first This is Yorkshire, after all! Ask to see the room or covered spot they use when it pours. Then picture your ceremony and photos there.
- Look at the light in the getting ready room Big windows make soft, flattering photos of you, your dress and your bridesmaids. Ask to see the bridal suite in daylight.
- Find the golden hour spot Ten minutes of evening light in a field, a walled garden or under old trees gives you the photos you’ll frame. It should be a short walk, not a drive.
- Keep the church close If you’re marrying in a church first, try to keep it within about twenty minutes of the venue so your drinks reception doesn’t lose its buzz.
- Book early for late summer Forty two of my 112 Yorkshire weddings were in August or September. If you want a Saturday then, most couples book a year or more ahead.
- Think about a Friday or winter date One in five of my Yorkshire weddings were on a Friday. Winter light can be beautiful too. The Tithe Barn and Thicket Priory both shone in the colder months.
Why couples book me
Relaxed, natural and a little bit of a party
Photographing weddings, more than 500 of them, so I know most Yorkshire venues inside out and where the best light is at each one.
With The Big Package. I stay right through the evening, long after most photographers have gone home, because that’s where the best fun happens.

Your venue questions, answered
Outdoor ceremonies, rain plans, prices and when to book. The things Yorkshire couples ask me most while they choose their venue.

Still got a question?
What are the best wedding venues in Yorkshire?
The best wedding venue in Yorkshire depends on the day you want. For a grand country house, Saltmarshe Hall, Rise Hall, Middleton Lodge and Holdsworth House are hard to beat. For a relaxed barn party, look at Bunny Hill, The Barn at Willerby and Riverlands. For something different, The Sun Pavilion in Harrogate and Danby Castle on the North York Moors are both special.
What are the best barn wedding venues in Yorkshire?
The barns I know best are Bunny Hill near North Cliffe, The Barn at Willerby near Hull, Riverlands near Howden, The Grand Lodge at Oaklands, The Beverley Barn and The Tithe Barn at Bolton Abbey. Danby Castle and The Coniston Hotel both have barns for the party too.
Which Yorkshire wedding venues are near Hull?
The Barn at Willerby, Tickton Grange, Rise Hall, Oaklands, Dunedin Country House, The Manor Rooms and Cave Castle are all close to the city. See my Hull wedding photography page for more.
Which Yorkshire venues can hold an outdoor ceremony?
Saltmarshe Hall, Tickton Grange, Oaklands, Holdsworth House, The Coniston Hotel, Crab Manor and Bawtry Hall all offer outdoor ceremonies. At Hackness Grange you marry on a little island in the lake. Always ask where the ceremony moves if it rains. Then go and see that room too.
Which Yorkshire wedding venues have rooms for guests?
Rise Hall has 31 bedrooms, Holdsworth House has 32, Saltmarshe Hall sleeps about 38 and Middleton Lodge has up to 27 rooms depending on the package. Bunny Hill has rooms around its courtyard. Bawtry Hall guests stay at The Crown Hotel down the road.
When should we book our Yorkshire venue and photographer?
Most of my Yorkshire couples book about 14 months before the wedding. Six in ten book more than a year ahead. August and September go first, so book your venue and photographer together if you can.
How much does a wedding photographer cost in Yorkshire?
My packages start at £1,650 for The Day Package, with The Big Package at £1,900 and The Album Package at £2,400. You can see everything that’s included on my packages page, or read my guide to wedding photographer prices in the UK.
Have you photographed at our Yorkshire venue?
Quite possibly. I’ve photographed weddings at 50 Yorkshire venues in the past five years alone. If yours isn’t on this page, send me a message and I’ll tell you if I’ve been there.
