Over 17 years and more than 500 weddings, I’ve learned that the best photos happen when you forget the camera is there – so that’s exactly how I work. I’ll blend in, capture the glances, the happy tears and the belly laughs as they happen, and keep the posed photos quick and painless. Guests often ask if I’ve known you for years. And when the dancing starts, I don’t pack up and leave – with The Big Package there’s no time limit, so I’m there for the whole party.

Why I love photographing Saltmarshe Hall
Where do I start? Saltmarshe Hall is a classic Yorkshire country house near Howden, on the banks of the River Ouse – exclusive use for every wedding, and it oozes elegance. As a Saltmarshe Hall wedding photographer I’ve been coming back here since 2016, most recently in summer 2025, and I’ll never run out of ideas.
It’s only changed for the better. The team are always ahead of the trend, creating a neutral but elegant backdrop that’s perfect for your own finishing touches. With 17 years and 500+ weddings behind me, I know exactly where the light falls here – from the sweeping staircase to the walled garden.
The grounds
Couple photos in the gardens & by the river
You can use anywhere in the gardens – formal photos in the walled garden, on the patio, or by the banks of the River Ouse. With a dedicated head gardener, the grounds look vibrant whatever your date, and on the right evening we can catch the sun setting over the river.
Couple photos don’t need to take long – just enough to find a spot or two for the frame-on-the-mantelpiece photos that last a lifetime.

Get ready in the main house, the two-bedroom cottage or the converted stables – there are lovely spots everywhere for the flowers, dress and rings. Wherever we are, I’m telling the story and flow of your day.

After all the waiting, you finally walk down the aisle in front of everyone you love. Indoors or out, the space fills with love – and I love hearing the oohs and aahs as the wedding party arrives.

Planning your timings
The best light at Saltmarshe Hall, season by season
Every month looks different here, so I plan your couple photos around the light rather than the clock. Here’s what to expect, whenever you’re getting married.
March – MaySpring
Fresh greens and blossom in the walled garden. Sunset moves from about 6pm to after 9pm, so golden-hour portraits slot in nicely between the meal and the first dance.
June – AugustSummer
Long, warm evenings, with the sun setting over the River Ouse at around 9.30pm in midsummer. I’ll steal you away for ten minutes after the speeches – often my favourite photos of the day.
September – NovemberAutumn
Rich colour across the grounds and softer, lower light all day. Sunset drops from around 8pm to before 4pm, so we’ll fit portraits around your timings.
December – FebruaryWinter
Candlelight, fires and that staircase. It’s dark by about 4pm, so we do portraits straight after the ceremony – and Bex and Iain’s winter wedding even had flame dancers on the lawn.

Let’s party – I stay until the end
Most photographers leave shortly after the first dance – I stay on to capture the party as standard. Remember the end of The Hangover, when they look back through the camera? I’m that camera – for all the memories you’ll laugh about for years.

The bath tap moment
Hannah and Josh’s wedding was one to remember – but this moment sticks in my head. A slightly tipsy Hannah climbed into the bath for a photo, accidentally knocked the tap and turned it on full, just as the evening was starting. Her laughter could be heard all around the venue!

How much does a Saltmarshe Hall wedding photographer cost?
My packages start at £1,650 for The Day Package, from bridal prep through to the first dance. The Big Package, with no time limit, is £1,900, and The Album Package with a 12×12 leather-bound album is £2,400. Travel to Saltmarshe Hall is included, and a £400 deposit secures your date. Have you photographed weddings at Saltmarshe Hall before?
Many times, since 2016 – including Nicola and James’s two-ceremony wedding, Lucy and Craig’s summer wedding, Bex and Iain’s winter wedding and Hannah and Josh’s legendary party. I was back again in summer 2025, so I know the house, the team and the grounds really well.
Where can we get ready at Saltmarshe Hall?
You can get ready in the main house, the two-bedroom cottage or the converted stables. Lucy got ready in the Yorkshire suite while Craig used the Stables, and the Howdenshire room has beautiful window light for the dress and the final touches.
Can we have an outdoor ceremony at Saltmarshe Hall?
Yes – the walled garden is a gorgeous spot for an outdoor ceremony, and there’s a lovely ceremony room inside the house if the weather has other ideas. Some couples even have both, like Nicola and James did.
Where are the best photo spots at Saltmarshe Hall?
The sweeping staircase is a must, with soft light from the tall windows. Outside, the walled garden, the lawns, the front door for confetti and the banks of the River Ouse all work beautifully – and on the right evening, the sunset over the river is something special.
What happens if it rains at Saltmarshe Hall?
The house is full of options – the staircase, the hallways and the big sash windows give soft, flattering light, and it’s easy to nip outside with umbrellas when there’s a break in the weather. Rain never stops us getting great photos here.
How long do the couple photos take?
Usually 10–20 minutes. I’ll take you to one or two of my favourite spots, then you’re straight back with your guests. In summer I may grab you for a few more minutes at golden hour.
Do you stay for the evening?
Yes – it’s my favourite part! The Big Package and The Album Package have no time limit, so I stay right through the party, capturing the first dance, the dancing and all the funny moments you’ll laugh about for years.
