Lindsey and Phil’s autumn barn wedding at Riverlands near Howden fell on the 3rd of October. Somebody forgot to tell the weather it was autumn. Blue skies, warm sunshine and a farm full of family and friends. It felt like the middle of summer from start to finish.

A farmhouse morning with the girls

Lindsey got ready in the farmhouse at Riverlands with her bridesmaids and close friends around her. Her hair went up into a soft low bun, her makeup got one last check in the mirror and then it was time for the lace dress.

There were a few happy tears when the family came in to see her. Then the close friend who was walking her down the aisle came in. The hug that followed in the hallway is one of my favourite moments of the whole day.

Phil got ready close by in his beige suit, with a tweed waistcoat hiding a bright floral lining. All the flowers were made by his mum, Stephanie. I love that the bouquets, buttonholes and table flowers all came from the family.

A sunny autumn ceremony in the brick barn

The ceremony was at 1pm in the brick barn. Lindsey walked in with a close friend under the green vines, then down the aisle between the old brick walls and wooden beams.

Phil couldn’t stop smiling. The two of them laughed their way through most of the vows. There was a reading part way through, then the rings, the signing and a very big cheer.

Confetti and one big group photo

Confetti came straight after, along the path outside the barn. Then we got everybody together for one big group photo. With around a hundred guests that’s no small job, but Lindsey and Phil really wanted it and everyone squeezed in!

They also asked for some lovely photos of both mums, so I kept an eye out for those all day. After the family groups we went off for couple photos by the red tractor, the old wooden gate, the lane past the fields and the vines in the courtyard. That October light was gorgeous.

Cake, speeches and a barn full of laughs

Lindsey and Phil cut the cake as soon as they walked into the wooden barn, with everyone on their feet cheering. It was a proper showstopper, three tiers covered in flowers.

Speeches came first, before the food, so everyone could relax over their meal. There was a lot of laughter, a few tissues and plenty of banter between the tables.

Hitster and a packed dance floor

Their first dance was at 7:15pm in the brick barn, with all their guests gathered round. Lindsey finished it with her arms in the air, which set the tone for the rest of the night!

Then the band Hitster took over and the dance floor never emptied. There was food at 8:30pm to keep everyone going, but nobody stayed off the dance floor for long. One of the lads even ended up flat on the floor mid move. That’s my kind of wedding!

Photographer’s tips

Tips for an autumn wedding at Riverlands

  1. Ask for the big group photo. There’s room outside the barns to fit a hundred guests in one shot. It only takes a few minutes.
  2. Cut the cake as you walk in.Everyone is already on their feet, so you get the cheers and it’s done before the meal.
  3. Check your sunset time.In early October the sun sets around 6:30pm, so plan your couple photos for the afternoon.
  4. Tell me who matters most.Lindsey asked for lovely photos of both mums, so I knew to look out for them all day.
